The Space Research group of the Physics Institute of the University of Bern is involved in many current and future space missions to investigate to investigate planets, their moons, comets and asteroids of our solar system.

The advertised PhD position is part of our participation in the Russian mission Phobus-Grunt mission, where a spacecraft will be launched in 2009 to the Martian moon Phobos. Phobos-Grunt will land on the surface of Phobos, perform in situ measurements, and collect surface samples that will be returned to Earth with a return capsule. Our group is engaged in the design, development, and construction of the laser mass spectrometer that will perform composition measurements of the soil on Phobus surface. The successful candidate will participate in the development of the flight hardware, testing and calibration, in the instrument integration on the spacecraft, and early data analysis of flight data.
Education The position requires a diploma or master’s degree in Physics, Astrophysics, or Space Science with excellent grades. We are seeking a talented and highly motivated individual who enjoys experimental work, with additional programming and data analysis skills. Experience with laser ablation and/or mass spectrometry is prefered. The position requires a high motivation to work in an international collaboration, and excellent communication skills. Proficiency in spoken and written English are prerequisites for the project, German language knowledge is necessary for the teaching assistance. Knowledge of Russian language would be an asset.
